Welcome to the web page of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. I hope you’ll find what you are looking for.
Our department is dedicated to the study and teaching of the languages, literatures and cultures of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds. It is one the largest departments of Spanish and Portuguese in the United States, and it offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses and areas of specialization in literature, culture, and linguistics.

Both our graduate and undergraduate programs have been ranked among the top ten in the nation by the National Council for Research and the Gourman Report. The College of Letters and Science has rewarded the department for its excellence in teaching and training of professionals. Our faculty enjoys of national and international reputation in the field, and is actively engaged in producing cutting-edge research. Many of our faculty members play a leading role in several Research Circles in the university, with the goal of fostering cross-disciplinary dialogues among faculty and students campus-wide. We are conscious of the increasing demand for the study of Spanish in the United States and have made a systematic effort to adjust to this demand while maintaining the high quality of our graduate programs and research.

Finally, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese aims to create an intellectual and cultural environment that stimulates all efforts in pursuing the acquisition of new knowledge and skills.
