Catherine Stafford joined the Department as an assistant professor in 2005. She teaches courses in linguistics, phonetics, second language acquisition and pedagogy, and she is also a core faculty member in UW's Second Language Acquisition Program. An applied linguist by training, Professor Stafford's research interests encompass cognitive aspects of adult language learning and in her research she has investigated the relationships among bilingualism, memory and age, and their influence on non-primary language learning in adulthood.
