Language Proficiency Exams
What is the difference between a Language PLACEMENT Exam and a Language PROFICIENCY Exam?
Language Placement Exams are the deciding factor when it comes to the level of Spanish at which you will begin your college career. New students to UW-Madison generally take these exams at SOAR. More information on Language Placement Exams can be found on the Testing & Evaluation Services website:

Language Proficiency Exams are given by UW-Madison Department of Spanish & Portuguese faculty for two reasons:
- In accordance with the College of Letters and Science regulations concerning program assessment, the Spanish program periodically carries out an evaluation of the language proficiency of Spanish majors. Students may be required to take an oral proficiency test in Spanish.
- Students with a need to demonstrate proficiency in either the Spanish or Portuguese language for other programs or awards, may contact one of the following faculty to request a test:
