March 10, 2008, Centro Hispano Youth Programs

Centro Hispano of Dane County is seeking dedicated individuals to serve Madison’s Latino youth as volunteer tutors/mentors in area middle and high schools. Our goal is to provide quality academic support in addition to positive cultural and recreational activities on a daily basis. Accomplishing these goals is made easier with the support of dedicated community volunteers. We ask that each volunteer commit a minimum of one hour a week. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to form relationships that will help the youth involved realize their full potential and serve as a role model along the way. Additionally, as a volunteer you are afforded the chance to familiarize yourself with more diverse populations in the greater Madison community.

Each program throughout the city is unique but all share several basic elements. ASPIRA, our High School program, primarily attends to the academic needs of participating students. As a volunteer tutor, you can work with students in the classroom, match up with a student one on one, or serve as a tutor at ASPIRA’s drop-in tutoring sessions that take place 2-4 times a week after school. Culturally focused groups, such as Latin dance groups are forming and require interested volunteers as well. At the middle school level, we collaborate through our Juventud program with various community organization including Madison School and Community Recreation (MSCR) and Urban League of Greater Madison (ULGM) to provide both academic support and cultural and recreational activities for all students as part of Schools of Hope’s effort to eliminate Madison’s achievement gap and provide every student with a legitimate chance of succeeding. Volunteers with these programs have the opportunity to tutor students during the day or after school in addition to participating in after-school activities with them ranging from a dodge ball and basketball to cooking club and beat production.

Our programs benefit greatly from the involvement of Spanish speaking tutors and students of Latino culture so please consider this chance to get to know your community better and make a major contribution to it as you impact the lives of Madison’s diverse youth population. We would love to tell more about the programs to find the best place for your talents. Contact David Landgraf at david@chdc.us or by phone at (608) 663-7322 to get involved or to answer any questions you may have volunteering.

Literacy and Math Tutors Needed!
Volunteer your time to help a child improve his/her reading and math skills.
Volunteers are needed as one-on-one tutoring in Glendale's after school Safe
Haven program. No previous experience is necessary.

Why Volunteer at Glendale?
Only 48% of Glendale's third graders performed at an Advance or Proficient
level in a state-wide reading test in 2006. In math, only 39% of Glendale's
third graders scored at the Advanced or Proficient level. Until third grade,
children learn to read, after third grade they read to learn. If students
have not become proficient readers by third grade, they risk falling even
farther behind each year.

How to Get Started:
Simply fill out the MMSD application and disclosure forms available
in the front office, or online at http://www.mmsd.org/soh/volunteer.htm.
You can mail (1201 Tompkins Drive, Madison, WI 53716) or fax (608-204-0409)
these forms to the school or leave them in the front office and a Volunteer
Coordinator will get in touch with you.
